The Legend of Zelda Live-Action Movie Gets Premiere Date

It was originally revealed in 2023 that The Legend of Zelda is getting a live-action Hollywood movie, with creator Shigeru Miyamoto serving as a co-producer. We’ve gotten our first real details since then: as of now, the movie is scheduled to hit the big screen on March 26, 2027.

Avi Arad, as well as Sony and Nintendo, are also all co-producing the film. Nintendo is putting more money into it than Sony. Wes Ball, known for working on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and The Maze Runner, is in the director’s seat.

When the news was first disclosed, Miyamoto said, “I have been working on the live-action film of ‘The Legend of Zelda’ for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films. I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”

So far there is no word on the plot or any actors involved. In 2015, back before there was any Zelda movie, Miyamoto and A Link To The Past and Wind Waker producer Takashi Tezuka were asked about how they would like a theoretical live-action film to play out. Miyamoto implied a Caucasian actor would be good for Link, and Tezuka remarked, “…personally, it would be very fun and awesome if Link was played by a female actress, a boyish female actress.”

Will this be how the movie ends up being cast? And to be clear, Tezuka isn’t talking about turning Link into a female character, just having a woman play him, similar to how in anime male characters are sometimes voiced by women.

Are you interested in a live-action Legend of Zelda movie with its original creator involved?
