Deadline exclusively revealed that a live-action TV adaptation of the manga Claymore is being developed. CBS Studios and Propagate Content are working with actor and producer Masi Oka, as well as with original publisher Shueisha.
Shueisha and Oka are executive producing, along with Propagate Content employees Ben Silverman, Howard T. Owens, and Rodney Ferrell. So far a writer is not attached to the project.
Oka previously co-produced Netflix’s live-action Death Note adaptation. According to his IMDB page, he’s also a producer for upcoming titles based on Mega Man, Attack on Titan, and The Promised Neverland. He is a manga fan in real life, saying in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, “My house is like a manga library in many ways, and it’s great because I get to call it research. These days, I actually like to read them in real time, so I still subscribe to magazines and read them in real time. So I get a sense of what’s cool before it makes it to the U.S. market.” And though he’s involved in producing, he’s probably best known for being an actor in the shows Heroes and Hawaii Five-0.
Deadline was not able to supply much information, giving the feeling that things are very early in this project. Before this, Claymore received anime and video game adaptations.
VIZ Media publishes the original Claymore manga by Norihiro Yagi, and gave this description for it:
In a world where monsters called Yoma prey on humans and live among them in disguise, humanity’s only hope is a new breed of warrior known as Claymores. Half-human, half-monster, these silver-eyed slayers possess supernatural strength but are condemned to fight their savage impulses—or lose their humanity completely.
VIZ Media has published all 27 volumes of the manga, and also offers it as a box set.
