Get ready for a brand new anime series called Gachiakuta! It’s set to premiere in July 2025 in Japan, and you’ll be able to watch it on Crunchyroll if you live in North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, CIS (except Russia and Belarus), and the Indian subcontinent.
We’ve just gotten a sneak peek at one of the main characters, Enjin, thanks to a new short trailer and visual released on the official website and X (Twitter). Enjin is voiced by the talented Katsuyuki Konishi, who you might know as Tengen Uzui from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.
In the story, Enjin is the one who finds Rudo after Rudo is thrown into a terrible place called the Pit. Enjin sees something special in Rudo and decides to recruit him into the Cleaners. The Cleaners are a group dedicated to fighting dangerous creatures made of trash, known as trash beasts. The visual for Enjin has a cool tagline: “I guess it’s time for some cleaning.”
Gachiakuta is based on a manga series written by Kei Urana and graffiti artist Hideyoshi Andou. The anime is being directed by Fumihiko Suganuma, who has worked on DRAGON QUEST The Adventure of Dai. The series is being put together by Hiroshi Seko, known for DAN DA DAN, and the characters are designed by Satoshi Ishino from Godzilla Singular Point. The exciting music for the anime is composed by Taku Iwasaki, who also did the music for Gurren Lagann. The animation is being created by studio bones, a well-known studio famous for producing high-quality anime.
Let’s meet the main voice actors:
- Rudo is voiced by Aoi Ichikawa (Yamada Asaemon Fuchi in Hell’s Paradise). Rudo is the main character who starts in the slums and is wrongly accused of a crime.
- Enjin is voiced by Katsuyuki Konishi (Tengen Uzui in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba). Enjin is the leader figure who brings Rudo into the Cleaners.
- Zanka is voiced by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Kirito in Sword Art Online). We don’t have many details about Zanka yet, but with Matsuoka’s talent, Zanka is sure to be an interesting character.
- Riyo is voiced by Yumiri Hanamori (Yamada Asaemon Sagiri in Hell’s Paradise). Like Zanka, details about Riyo are still emerging, but Hanamori’s past roles suggest Riyo will be a strong female character.
The Gachiakuta manga has been running in Weekly Shonen Magazine since February 2022 and already has 14 volumes out in Japan. If you want to read it in English, Kodansha USA is publishing it.
Here’s a quick summary of the story:
Rudo lives in a poor area of a floating city. The rich people in the city live high above and just throw their trash down below. One day, Rudo is falsely accused of murder and is punished by being thrown off the edge of the city along with all the garbage. Down below, in the Pit, the trash has created horrible monsters. To get revenge and find the truth, Rudo must learn to use a new power and join the Cleaners, who fight these trash beasts.
Gachiakuta promises to be an exciting anime with a unique and dark world. The combination of studio bones’ animation, the talented voice cast, and the intriguing story from the manga makes it one to watch out for in summer 2025. The series explores themes of social inequality, environmental issues, and the fight for justice in a world literally built on discarded waste. The stark contrast between the opulent floating city and the monstrous Pit creates a visually striking and thematically rich setting. Rudo’s journey from a falsely accused slum dweller to a powerful Cleaner is a classic underdog story with a gritty twist. The concept of trash beasts born from human waste adds a layer of ecological commentary, making the series relevant to contemporary issues.
Enjin’s role as a mentor figure who recognizes Rudo’s potential is crucial for Rudo’s development. The Cleaners organization itself represents a glimmer of hope in the bleak landscape of the Pit, fighting back against the monstrous consequences of societal neglect. The action sequences are expected to be dynamic and visually impressive, given studio bones’ reputation for high-quality animation and fight choreography. The character designs by Satoshi Ishino are distinct and capture the gritty atmosphere of the series, while Taku Iwasaki’s music will likely enhance the emotional impact and intensity of the scenes. Hiroshi Seko’s series composition suggests a well-structured and engaging narrative, building upon the source material effectively.
Fans of dark fantasy, action-packed shonen anime, and series with social commentary will likely find Gachiakuta appealing. The anime’s premiere in July 2025 is highly anticipated, and the streaming availability on Crunchyroll ensures a wide audience can experience this unique and compelling story as it unfolds. The manga’s growing popularity and the positive buzz surrounding the anime adaptation indicate that Gachiakuta has the potential to become a significant hit in the anime landscape. The detailed world-building, complex characters, and thrilling action sequences are all hallmarks of a successful and engaging anime series. As we get closer to the premiere date, expect more trailers, visuals, and character introductions to further build excitement for Gachiakuta.
The series is not just about fighting monsters; it’s also about Rudo’s personal journey of seeking truth and vengeance. His wrongful conviction and exile are the driving forces behind his determination to survive and fight back against the system that cast him aside. The relationship between Rudo and Enjin will be central to the story, with Enjin guiding Rudo and helping him unlock his hidden potential. The other members of the Cleaners, Zanka and Riyo, will also play important roles, adding depth and complexity to the team dynamic. The anime promises to explore themes of friendship, loyalty, and the struggle against injustice in a harsh and unforgiving world. The visual style, blending manga aesthetics with graffiti art influences, will likely create a unique and memorable viewing experience. Gachiakuta is poised to be a standout anime of summer 2025, offering a fresh and exciting take on the shonen genre with its dark and imaginative world.
