The original anime Lazarus is hitting Adult Swim next month, and ahead of this the opening has dropped. In it you can hear the song “Vortex” being performed by Kamasi Washington.
Lazarus Opening
Lazarus is getting a lot of hype because it’s directed by anime veteran Shinichiro Watanabe, whose credits include Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, two series that also have played on Adult Swim. It’s likewise being hyped because it was made at MAPPA, whose big-deal titles include Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and Attack on Titan: The Final Season.
The anime will consist of 13 episodes, and it debuts on Adult Swim on April 5 at midnight. After that it will stream on Max.
The ending theme song is called “Lazarus” like the title and is performed by The Boo Radleys.
Watanabe is on-board to direct each and every episode. The action sequences are being designed by Chad Stahelski, whose credits include being the director of the John Wick movies starring Keanu Reeves.
Adult Swim gave this description for the plot:
Lazarus Plot
The year is 2052 – an era of unprecedented peace and prosperity prevails across the globe. The reason for this: mankind has been freed from sickness and pain. Nobel Prize winning neuroscientist Dr. Skinner has developed a miracle cure-all drug with no apparent drawbacks called Hapuna. Hapuna soon becomes ubiquitous… and essential. However, soon after Hapuna is officially introduced, Dr. Skinner vanishes.
Three years later, the world has moved on. But Dr. Skinner has returned – this time, as a harbinger of doom. Skinner announces that Hapuna has a short half-life. Everyone who has taken it will die approximately three years later. Death is coming for this sinful world – and coming soon.
As a response to this threat, a special task force of 5 agents is gathered from across the world to save humanity from Skinner’s plan. This group is called “Lazarus.” Can they find Skinner and develop a vaccine before time runs out?
